Millions of people remodel their kitchens every year. Most of the time, that means new cabinets. A new cabinet or two can turn an outdated kitchen into a functional, multi-purpose hub for your home. With an overwhelming number of options at a wide range of prices, it can be hard to narrow it down. Here are a couple of tips to help you choose your new cabinets.
Different types
Stock and semicustom cabinets are generally the most popular. Stock refers to cabinets that are in stock and ready to ship. These are the most popular because they typically ship the fastest and tend to be the most economical. It is also possible to purchase accessories for stock cabinets that make them even more functional than just purchasing a standard cabinet. Semicustom cabinets offer a whole lot more options but come with a larger price tag. Custom cabinets are the most expensive option, and can sometimes take well over a month to make.
Make the Cabinets Work for You
A modern cabinet may have user-friendly options. If you want a cabinet to store large items such as pots and pans, you can get a cabinet that will allow you to slide out the shelves to make your things more accessible. You can get pull-out garbage and recycling bins, so you don’t have to trip over them anymore. You can even get a built-in storage area for wine or for displaying china.
Be Prepared!
Before leaving your cabinet supplier, be sure to grab a repair kit. These typically contain some putty, extra screws, colored wax, and markers to cover up small scratches. It’s also a good idea to pick up a few extra hinges and drawer-slide systems because these items tend to wear out first; fortunately, they’re quite easy to fix. Before you install your cabinets, unbox all of them and grab your tape measure. If you measure all of them before you get them on the wall, you can save yourself a lot of headache later.
Proper Support
You want to be sure that once you put your cabinets up they won’t be going anywhere. Before you hang them, screw in a 1”x3” beam at the bottom of where the cabinets will be to give them some extra support. It’s good to have plenty of help for this because you want to make sure the beam is completely level.
