Cabinets: Should You Paint or Stain Them?

Cabinets

Painting and staining can give your cabinets a different look. Which one is right for you?

When you’re choosing your cabinets, you’ll have to make a lot of big decisions. One of those large decisions is whether you want to stain or paint the wood. This has a huge impact on how the cabinets look, but also in how they hold up over time, which matters a lot to homeowners. If you’re unsure of whether you want painted or stained cabinets, or even what the difference is, Surewood Fine Cabinetry is here to help inform you!

Painted Cabinets

Painted cabinets are assembled with materials that accept and hold paint very well, like poplar, MDF, and veneered plywood. It’s critical that these cabinets have flat surfaces, free of any knots or heavy grain patterns, for optimal paint application. Many custom cabinet shops don’t do any kind of finishing–or if they do, it’s a basic stain and conversion varnish–so when you do order already-painted cabinets from a custom shop, they tend to be more expensive. There are also a lot of options in terms of different kinds of paints and even how to apply the pain best.

Stained Options

Stained cabinetry seems to be confusing for a lot of people. It’s key that you understand what you’re actually getting when you look at staining options. You may want to take a look at samples first to really understand the difference. Stained cabinets can look much more natural and bring out some more of the texture and feel of the original wood, and tend to be the less expensive option, but may not have the same level of customization that painted cabinets do.

Which is Right For You?

It’s hard to say which one is best for a customer without having them actually take a look. Your best bet is to get in touch with your cabinetry company and take a look at individual samples. This will really give you the best idea of what you want and what you’re looking for in your cabinetry.
