When you have the luxury of owning your own in-home wine cellar, you also need to know how to store that wine. Of course, the wine cellar will help you regulate temperature and light, but you should still know the basics of wine storage. Here’s everything you need to know about storing your wine in your in-home wine cellar.
Not Too Warm
The first thing you need to know about proper wine storage is that heat is your enemy. When bottles get too warm, the chemical makeup of the wine can change and alter the taste greatly. Temperatures higher than 70-degrees can make a wine age far more quickly than they should, so keep the temperature in your wine cellar on the cool side.
Not Too Cool
It may sound like a scene out of “Goldilocks and the Three Bears,” but your wine cellar cannot be too cold either. Wines storage in your fridge can last up to two months without changing the chemicals in the bottles. However, if a wine is left in too cold of a temperature for too long, the cork could dry out and allow air in. To be safe, keep your wine cellar between 45-degrees and 70-degrees to make sure that the wines taste like they’re supposed to.
Lights Down Low
The right temperature is the name of the game when it comes to proper wine storage, but lights are important too. When under lights that are too harsh and too bright, the integrity of the wine is compromised. UV rays can age a wine too quickly, which is one of the reasons why wine cellars are typically underground.
