Choosing Between Granite & Quartz Countertops

Countertops

Whether you choose quartz or granite, you will have beautiful countertops.

Granite is a much sought-after material for countertops in homes because it is seen as a sign of wealth and sophistication. In addition, its natural qualities are highly admired by homeowners and prospective homebuyers. However, a material that is often overlooked is quartz. While quartz countertops aren’t entirely natural, they still have good qualities. Here is a guide to help you understand the differences between quartz and granite countertops.

Price

Neither quartz nor granite countertops are inexpensive options, which is to be expected when you consider their quality. These are both high-end materials, so their prices match their qualities. If you are looking for a more inexpensive option, Corian countertops may be the ones for you.

Maintenance/Durability

Granite’s natural qualities mean that it was different imperfections within it when you get it. This is an attractive feature to some homeowners and a dealbreaker for others. If you are the kind of person who wants a perfectly uniform countertop, granite is probably not the material for you. In addition, granite is prone to chipping and staining. If you have small children, this could be an important thing to consider.

On the other hand, quartz is mostly natural (between 93-97%), but is manufactured to look more uniform than granite. This could be good if you want a material that looks natural but does not have the imperfections that completely natural materials do. Also, quartz is less prone to staining than granite is, which could be especially useful when you are cooking in the kitchen.

Both these materials require maintenance, however, quartz does not need to be sealed as granite does.

How To Decide

Ultimately, like many decisions, it all comes down to your personal preference. Both granite and quartz countertops are beautiful options that would look great in your home. It all depends on what you’re looking for. Are you willing to take the time to seal your countertops? Is resistance to chipping and staining important to you? Do you need your countertops to be completely natural? These are the questions you need to ask yourself before deciding which material to use for your countertops.
